Support Janitorial, Security, and Laundry Workers

unnamed.jpg

Portland City Council on will be voting next week on a proposal to require labor peace agreements for their contractors in janitorial, security, and industrial laundry services. What this means in effect if passed is that the city won’t work with any contractors in these industries whose workers don’t have some kind of labor agreement with their employer. This would be a huge step for protecting workers’ rights to organizing in these high-risk industries. Workers are lining up to testify in support and could use a lot of community support at the hearing!

Join us on Thursday December 13 at 2pm at Portland City Hall (1221 SW 4th Ave.) for this important vote and to show solidarity with janitorial, security and laundry workers!

2018 Scrooge of the Year

Every holiday season Portland Jobs with Justice comes together to celebrate our community, and to vote for the winner of the not-so-coveted annual Scrooge of the Year Award. This award is voted on by the community (that’s you!) and is given each year to a bad boss, a politician, a corporation, or some other deserving institution that has been particularly nasty in the past year.

Click Here to learn about the 2018 Scrooge of the Year Award nominees!

Of course, we think it’s important that the voting process for this award is true to our American democratic system. That’s right – this election is for sale! You can purchase as many votes as you want for as many different candidates as you want to let your voice be heard in deciding the worst #badboss in town.

December 8 from 6-9pm at the SEIU Local 49 ballroom.
Admission to the award party is $15 pre-sale$20 at the door
Pre-sale admission ends on Saturday 12/8 at 12pm.

Each admission ticket comes with 20 free votes. Additional votes are available to purchase online and at the party for $1 per vote. Votes are available online until Saturday 12/8 at 6pm.

Click Here to get your pre-sale admission tickets with 20 free votes today, and also to buy additional early votes online for your (least) favorite candidates!

The Scrooge of the Year Award Party is a potluck.

  • Ambassador Training

This workshops focuses on recruiting potential workers to the industry. After this workshop, all participants will be eligible to table and outreach in the community on behalf of Oregon Tradeswomen. You will also have the tools necessary to return to your companies, unions, or organizations and begin to launch your own ambassador program.

  • Running a Committee

Committees can be a powerful tool within any organization to create change and support all workers. This session will focus on Women’s Committees and their role in unions. However, this information is easily adapted to other committees including those that are based at a company, focus on other populations, or in other organizations. Participants will leave with a packet of information about how to start and run an effective committee.

Iconic Portland Labor Struggles

Portland Rising invites you to our October meeting

ICONIC PORTLAND LABOR STRUGGLES:

Organizing at Powell’s Books & Burgerville

image.png

Wednesday, October 10th at 7pm – 9pm

SEIU Local 49, 3536 SE 26th Ave (just south of Powell Blvd.)

Worker struggles at Powell’s and Burgerville are iconic in large part because workers in both places boldly took on companies that hold themselves up to be among Portland’s most liberal establishments.

·       What is it like to organize against anti-union employers who are “celebrated” for being progressive?

·       How does one organize and run a worker-centered union campaign?

·       What role can community pressure play in winning a good contract for workers?

·       Can we generalize and learn from the experiences of these two key labor struggles?

Come hear workers from International Longshore Workers Union Local 5 (Powell’s Books) and the Burgerville Workers Union (Burgerville), as well as Jobs with Justice organizers discuss the two struggles, strikes, and victories.

For more information, call Jobs with Justice 971-242-8702
